Sometimes miracles are just kind people with good hearts.

At the end of The Wind in His Heart Sadie Higgins was given the choice of going into Newford’s Angel Outreach program or stay in jail. She chose Newford and this is what happened to her there.

But Dog Sisters isn’t so much a sequel to The Wind in His Heart as a coda that entwines with the story of Lola Soledad and her family of choice, navigating life as recovering addicts. Lola is starting to get her life on track but everything changes when she finds the little lost dog Mijo and the edges of the world she knows peel back to reveal another world that is at once strange and dangerous and filled with wonder.

"I have to admit that I thought Sadie was pretty much irredeemable and was prepared to leave her in jail at the end of that novel [The Wind in His Heart]. But MaryAnn insisted I at least give her a chance, hence that penultimate chapter featuring her in The Wind in His Heart. And once I did that she kept asking me, what happened to Sadie in Newford? When are you going to tell that story?"
