Hi everyone,
Welcome to all the new people who recently signed up. Your fellow subscribers can attest to
the fact that my newsletters are few and far between, so don't worry: you won't be inundated with emails from me.
Some long-time subscribers may be unaware that you're eligible for a random draw that we're having
on February 14th for a signed advance reading copy (ARC) of my new novel, The Cats of Tanglewood Forest,
with illustrations by none other than Charles Vess. The ARC contains black & white sketches of
Charles' work, so it's a collectible in that the hardcover doesn't have these sketches. If you're a
fan of drawings, like me, it's very special.
This draw is only for members of my mailing list (because I appreciate you). You needn't do anything more
than sit back, cross your fingers, light a candle, say a prayer and wait until February 14th. I'll email
the winners (yes, we'll draw a couple of names) and, with their permission, I'll congratulate them on
my Facebook page (by name
only). I don't know if you're among those who've officially 'liked' my page,
but there are advantages. A lucky reader from Australia won one of these ARCs a couple of days ago by
entering a little contest I'd posted there (congrats again to Elizabeth).
My author's copies of the final book arrived this week, and it is a stunningly handsome tome filled
with gorgeous paintings by Mr. Vess. We're ecstatic that it's been getting great reviews, including
starred ones on both Publishers Weekly
and Quill & Quire. Here's another

Little Brown moved the release date up to March 5th so that it will be out when MaryAnn and I go to Tucson
for the annual book festival in March. It would have been so sad to go all that way and not be able to show
off the book. What am I saying? We are never sad to go to Tucson, but you know what I mean.
Let me share one of my favourite Charles Vess illustrations, this being Lillian arrival in the valley of the
bear people.
Speaking of appearances, I want to let you know about a few events coming up:
Feb. 9, 12:30-2:30 PM, TORONTO
Impossible Words Literary Salon (workshop)
237 Wallace Ave. (at Lansdowne)
The event is free and will feature a reading and interview, as well as short readings by two young writers from
Toronto Street Writers (a local youth writing group).
Feb. 20-25, SEATTLE
Feb. 20, 6-9 PM: Music & signing at Chaco Canyon Cafe (organic vegetarian) in West Seattle (free, first come, first served; seats about 40 people)
Feb. 21, 6 PM: Casual conversation & music at Pacific Northwest Writers Association,
Writers Cottage, (free, open to public)
Feb. 22-24: Music, panels, hanging out at our booth in the Marketplace
at FaerieCon West, which is always wonderful.
Feb. 25, 7-9 PM: Reading, music & signing at University Bookstore, University of WA, 4326 University Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105
While it's too early for The Cats of Tanglewood Forest to be available in Seattle,
we will have some of the ARCs to give out as prizes at each of our events there. Be sure to bring your lucky charms.
March 9-10, TUCSON FESTIVAL OF BOOKS, University of AZ
I'll be signing The Cats of Tanglewood Forest at the Mostly Books booth at 10 AM on Saturday, as well as after all of my panels on both Saturday and Sunday.
March 16, 1-3 PM, OTTAWA Silver Snail, 363 Bank St.
Our official launch of The Cats of Tanglewood Forest takes place at one of my favourite stores in Ottawa.
We have a few other events on the horizon, but some of your eyes are glazing over, so I'll tell you about them next time.
MaryAnn and I hope to see you in some of these places (although sadly, she won't be with me in Toronto). Good luck with the draw and thanks so much for all your support.
